Law can be a highly rewarding career, but also frustrating and incredibly stressful at times. There are several things lawyers can do to manage stress both within and outside their office. Here are a few suggestions to beat the stress:
1. Exercising. We know you have a busy schedule, but you can still sneak in half an hour or so of exercise at lunch time. This would greatly improve your mood, focus, and energy levels. Even exercising before or after work can be highly beneficial in combating anxiety which would ultimately help you fall asleep at night.
2. Getting Enough Sleep. Some lawyers delay sleep at night in an attempt to reclaim some personal hours before restarting the daily grind. Not only is this bad for your mental health, it also undermines your physical health and productivity. Less sleep fuels chances of more careless mistakes, which can cost you dearly in the long run; you might even lose a partnership. This is why you should get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night.
3. Talking. If you are stressed about something at work, do not internalize it, talk to someone about it. But be careful to whom you are talking to, as uncontrolled venting could lead to serious repercussions if it falls into the ears of the management.
4. Listening to Music. There’s nothing like a short music break to recharge the mind. Whatever the genre, music is shown to increase endorphin production and slow the heart rate down.
Transcripts can also be very helpful for long-term cases which go on for years. With the help of a transcribed case, lawyers can always refer back to it to prepare a presentation or look up evidence. Transcripts of court depositions are also helpful in avoiding fall outs with clients and witnesses as they give the lawyer proof in case the client or witness turns hostile.
